The Alexander Technique
With the Alexander Technique we can recognise and change our habitual ways of moving and thinking. It enables us to restore co-ordination and ease of movement in everyday activities.

Instead of experiencing stress, tension and pain, you can move gracefully without stiffness and enjoy all the activities and demands of daily living.

If you are looking for a different perspective on how to approach problems, here is a practical technique that takes you out of the mundane, improves general awareness, and the ability to think on your feet.

Who can learn it?
The Alexander Technique is at heart a simple process of increasing our ability to be self-aware during activities and free ourselves from unwanted habits. It can be learnt by anyone: Alexander pupils range from 6 to 98 years of age, and come in all shapes and sizes.

There is no minimum level of fitness required, and pupils are not asked to perform exercises or wear special clothing. An introductory lesson will give you the best opportunity to experience how the Technique works and how to use it.

The benefits
The Alexander Technique is taught at most music and drama academies, as well as many large corporations, as it is famous for its ability to help with the following:
personal development, poise, posture and general self-awareness, back, neck and shoulder problems, stress and tension, breathing and voice problems, how to present oneself, balance and co-ordination.
A creative learning process
The best way to learn the Alexander Technique is through one-to-one lessons that are related to your individual needs. The teacher’s hands together with verbal instruction encourage the release of inappropriate tension and guide you through everyday activities such as standing, sitting, walking and working. In this way you come to appreciate how thought affects action and you experience how breathing can become easier and movement can become freer and lighter.

In time and with practice you will be able to use your new understanding and skill in more complex and demanding activities and situations in your daily life. You can bring awareness and poise to anything that you do.

Scientific evidence

A randomised controlled trial of Alexander lessons was published in the British Medical Journal 20th August 2008. Its main conclusion was that individual lessons in the Technique have long term benefits for patients with chronic back pain. 579 patients with chronic or recurrent low back pain were recruited from 64 GP practices. Patients were randomly allocated to 59 STAT-certified teachers, and control groups included patients receiving massage, exercises, or GP normal care. Lessons in the Alexander Technique outperformed all control groups. The results show that taking one-to-one lessons in the Technique led to long-term benefits: a reduction in the number of days in pain and significant improvement in function and quality of life.
